The Ontario Reign‘s season has commenced, and with an overtime loss and a win, they have a record of 1-0-1-0. The Reign scored four goals in both contests and had 11 skaters and one goalie record at least one point.
This year’s Reign roster consists of the next wave of prospects turning pro, along with a handful of other prospects in their second or third year. With that, we are back to our weekly segment of the Three Stars of the Week for the Reign.
Honorable mention:
This segment will feature an honorable mention. Not every one of these will have an honorable mention, but this week goes to Erik Portillo. Portillo turned aside 41 of 48 shots (.854 sv%), but this week isn’t about the numbers.
Portillo played his first regular-season game since February 17th of this year. A long road back, and it’s good to see him back out on the ice, trying to help the Reign win games.
Oh Ports?!?! He’s CRUSHING it!!!

Otto Salin
Stats: Two games played, one goal, zero assists, one point, -1 rating, three shots on goal
Otto Salin is my third star for the Reign this past week. I thought Salin played well to start the weekend. From what I saw during his cup of coffee with the Reign at the end of last season, Salin’s game came as advertised.
He was active in the offensive zone, creating a good scoring chance in the slot in Friday’s game. His offensive instincts and skating paid off with a heads-up breakaway opportunity where he scored his first professional goal in North America.
First pro goal for Otto Salin

Francesco Pinelli
Stats: Two games played, one goal, one assist, two points, +1 rating, two shots on goal
Francesco Pinelli needs to have a strong start to his third professional season, and he did that in the Reign’s season-opening loss to Tucson. Pinelli scored on his lone shot on goal and was deployed as a winger at 5v5, the power play, and penalty kill. He had a quiet game on Sunday, but Friday’s game earned him a spot on the list.
Franky got that fire in him!!

Akil Thomas
Stats: Two games played, two goals, one assist, three points, +2 rating, six shots on goal
No doubt about who was this week’s number-one star. Akil Thomas led all Reign skaters with three points during the weekend and found himself on the highlight reel, showing off the soft mitts to score on his former roommate, Matthew Villalta.
OMG R.D.A!!!!
