Steve Staios made one of his first big draft-day moves tonight, trading the 21st overall pick in the 2025 NHL draft to the Nashville Predators for multiple picks in return.
The Ottawa Senators had their lowest first-round pick in years tonight as the team made the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
As a result, the team did not get a chance to pick a player until 21st overall.
However, Steve Staios chose not to use that pick, instead trading it to the Nashville Predators for the 23rd and 67th overall picks.
The Predators used that pick to select defenseman Cameron Reid, who was projected to be a late first-round pick.
Getting a very early 3rd round pick for moving down just two spots at this point in the draft must have been a no-brainer for the Senators as they very likely will still be able to get the player they wanted anyways at 23.
Staios probably asked Barry Trotz who he was planning on selecting with the 21st pick before he felt comfortable trading it, so unless he wanted Bill Zonnon, who was taken 22nd overall by the Penguins, he will get the player he wanted.
So from the Senators perspective, they basically got a free 3rd round pick.
For the Predators, Barry Trotz clearly wanted to make sure he got Reid, and perhaps he was worried that Kyle Dubas of the Penguins also had his eye on the left-handed defenseman.
At 23, Staios and the Senators selected right-handed defenseman Logan Hensler from the University of Wisconsin out of the NCAA.
Hensler had 2 goals and 12 points in 32 games this season, matching his scoring rate in the USHL last season.
Right-handed defenders typically come at a premium in the draft so perhaps this trade will look quite good from the Senators' perspective in a few years time.
