Ahead of tonight’s game in Anaheim some surprising news has dropped as Florida’s Brad Marchand will play, reported by Jameson Olive, Director of Digital Platforms and later confirmed by the team.
Less than three weeks ago it was thought that the veteran would miss all of October. Even after word going around that the recovery was coming along faster than expected, a return tonight after Florida played only two games without him was hardly expected. Instead he’ll be back on the first line along with Sam Reinhart, and Brady Tkachuk, forming a unit the Ducks won’t be so thrilled to face. The 38-year-old underwent surgery in mid-August, and while details weren’t exactly clear, it was seemingly a result of the hip and sports hernia issues he faced last March. The veteran had hoped that the long off-season would work to his benefit, with a sudden decision to have the procedure done after all which cost him training camp. Assuming the issues are now in the rear view, only missing two games, it was clearly the right choice.
Going into Year 18, the 2006 third round pick has shown no signs of slowing down. His incredible work ethic and intangibles would make for a bottom-six presence any team would love to have, if the offense had dried up into his late thirties. Instead Marchand remains a top line contributor and if anything, playing in Florida has actually unlocked a new gear not seen in years. In a campaign defined by its injuries, preventing the Panthers from a real shot at going for a third straight Stanley Cup, the winger ranked fourth in team scoring with 54 points in 52 games. Had he managed to suit up for another 10-15, let alone the 30 contests he missed it’s safe to assume he’d surpass Reinhart’s team lead.
If Marchand is able to suit up for at least 48 games this year, a total he has eclipsed every year since 2012-13, he’ll break the 1,200 game mark. He’s one of just four currently active players left from the ’06 draft, having surpassed former Capital Nicklas Bäckström in points with his last assist, and chasing Ottawa’s Claude Giroux in that category as second-best of the class.
As exciting as tonight’s news is for Panther fans, the rotten injury luck hasn’t left the team alone yet. Yesterday Aleksander Barkov was placed on LTIR as the team worry that he experienced another significant knee injury. Reinhart, Sam Bennett, and Anton Lundell offer incredible center depth. The Panthers should have everything they need to jump back into the playoffs, even if they have to march on without the franchise’s longest tenured player in Barkov for an extended period yet again. You never know what tricks general manager Bill Zito has up his sleeve, either, but first things first tonight will be about Marchand and the team looking to get back to their status as one of the league’s best.
Speaking to everything they’ve dealt with over the past year, Armando Velez of the Locked On Panthers Podcast reports that tonight will be the first regular season contest where Marchand, Matthew Tkachuk, and Seth Jones will all play together. With the longtime Bruin activated, Florida currently has a little breathing room with around $2.25MM in cap room. As $3.97MM of that space comes from Barkov’s current designation, assuming he is able to return sometime in the regular season, Zito will have to get creative. If his tenure in Florida so far is any evidence, they’ll find a path forward one way or another.
