Brad Marchand’s return to Boston was never going to be ordinary.
The longtime Boston Bruins player and eventual captain, now with the Florida Panthers, stepped back onto the TD Garden ice Tuesday night for the first time as a visitor.
It's been more than 16 years since Marchand debuted with Boston, and the emotion of the moment caught up to him quickly.
During the first TV timeout, the Bruins played a tribute video honoring Marchand’s nearly 16 seasons with the franchise, with a highlight reel that brought the TD Garden crowd to its feet, sparking a standing ovation that lasted several minutes.

With cameras fixed on him throughout the tribute, Marchand visibly teared up on the Panthers bench. He tapped his chest and extended his arm toward the crowd in thanks, his eyes glistening as fans chanted “Marchy!” from every corner of the arena.
When the video ended, Marchand skated out to center ice and saluted the fans, many holding up his old No. 63 Bruins jerseys, before returning to the bench to collect himself.
Marchand's significant contributions to the Bruins are highlighted by his 2011 Stanley Cup win in Boston, the first one in his resume after winning a second title with the Panthers last season following a trade-deadline move to Florida.
The 37-year-old winger didn’t take long to make his mark on the game, assisting on a Mackie Samoskevich goal just over a minute into the first period.
The Panthers and Bruins entered the night with matching 3–4–0 records, with Florida leading Boston 1-0 at the end of the first period.
