The Florida Panthers continued their western road trip while trying to navigate a season disrupted by injuries.
Defenseman Seth Jones returned to the lineup in Vancouver after missing 26 games with a fractured collarbone.
Including Tuesday's game, ending in a 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks, Jones has appeared in 41 games for Florida this season. The blueliner has scored six goals to go with 18 assists for 24 total points while averaging 23:25 minutes of ice time per game.
To activate Jones, Florida had to make room in its active roster by removing someone from it, and the man of choice was winger Brad Marchand.
In doing so, the Panthers placed Marchand on long-term injured reserve, with the implications that might have.
The move, confirmed by Jim Biringer among others, was made retroactive to March 6 and satisfies cap requirements under league rules.
Marchand has been dealing with a lower-body injury that has lingered throughout the season. Panthers head coach Paul Maurice said last week that Marchand would be out for "weeks."
The LTIR designation requires a player to miss 10 games and 24 days, whichever comes later. If applied retroactively to the aforementioned date, Marchand would satisfy the 24-day requirement on April 1.

Marchand has 54 points in 52 games this season, marking his first point-per-game pace since 2021-22 while still with the Boston Bruins. The veteran also represented Canada at the Olympics.
Marchand has already missed four games since Florida opted to rest him after the win over Detroit on March 6. Even if eligible to return in early April, the Panthers would have only a handful of regular-season games remaining.
It's fair to think Florida would opt for a full recovery and leave Marchand out of the lineup for the remainder of what could be considered a lost season for the reigning champions.
Florida sits at 33-31-3, has dropped the first two games of its four-game road trip, and is virtually eliminated from playoff contention, currently 13 points outside of the postseason picture with just 15 games left in the schedule.
