Panthers' Sasha Barkov Injury Update Emerges Amid NHL Season

The two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers are getting closer to seeing Sasha Barkov back on the ice with the team, but a return to game action is still weeks away.

Barkov has been skating since January and has increased his workload in recent weeks as he continues recovering from reconstructive surgery on his right knee. The procedure, performed Sept. 22, repaired both his MCL and ACL.

On Thursday, coach Paul Maurice said Barkov is expected to rejoin the team in practice next month in a limited capacity.

“Hopefully, in the next few weeks, Barky will join our group in a non-contact,” Maurice said.

That does not mean he is close to playing in games.

According to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, the Panthers are targeting a potential return by the end of March. Florida’s final regular-season game is April 15. That timeline would put Barkov at just over six months removed from surgery. Typical recovery time for ACL and MCL reconstruction ranges from seven to nine months, meaning the Panthers are still operating on an aggressive, yet carefully monitored, schedule.

General manager Bill Zito addressed Barkov’s timeline earlier this week.

“I would welcome him back to the Florida lineup the sooner the better as far as I am concerned,” Zito said, before adding, “But the medical diagnosis is pretty clear timing-wise. It’s one of those where it [may] look great, but you can’t cheat the system on that one. … When the doctors say he’s ready to play, he will be ready to play; I know that. Then he will play.”

Florida’s playoff outlook adds another layer to the situation. Even after a 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, the Panthers remain eight points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 24 games left. There is no guarantee there will be postseason hockey for Barkov when he returns.

The Panthers made it clear they will not rush their captain back. Barkov has taken the same approach.

“I am really happy where I am right now. I know the schedule,” Barkov said. “I’m in good hands. We have great people working for the Panthers: surgeons, physical therapists and doctors. So, I trust them, and they will always make the right decision. Hopefully, very soon, I’ll be back with the team.”

Teammates have reportedly been impressed with his focus during rehab. Stories have circulated about Barkov contacting trainers late at night and spending extended hours at the team facility. This is not about pain tolerance. It is about recovery from a significant injury.

Speaking earlier this week at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, where he announced a seven-figure donation, Barkov acknowledged the mental challenge of the process.

“It has been tough,” Barkov said, “but when something tough or bad happens, you try and find the positives. I don’t know. Maybe taking a long time off here will help me in the future to come back fresher, with a fresh mind, a fresh body. Hopefully, my career will last longer.”

There is also a financial component. Barkov carries a $3.8 million cap hit, and the Panthers have limited space . With defenseman Seth Jones expected to return soon, Florida will need to manage its cap carefully if Barkov is cleared.

Ultimately, the decision will come down to medical clearance and competitive reality. The Panthers value Barkov too much to risk long-term health for short-term gains. Whether he returns in March or waits longer, the priority remains the same: making sure he is fully ready when he does.

Florida hosts one of the teams it is chasing for a wild-card spot in the Buffalo Sabres at 7 p.m. ET Friday.
