Instead of Stuart Skinner, who was in the crease for each of the team’s three losses to start the series, Pittsburgh will put its series in the hands of backup Arturs Silovs.
Silovs, in the midst of his first season with the Penguins after coming over from the Vancouver Canucks, posted a .887 save percentage and 3.07 goals against average this year to go with his 19-12-8 record and a pair of shutouts.
The Latvia native who represented his home country at the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan Cortina is not making his postseason debut, as he made 10 starts for the Canucks during their two-round appearance in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Then, Silovs went 5-5 with a .898 SV% and 2.91 GAA with one shutout.
Skinner played well for the most part in the two losses Pittsburgh suffered on home ice at the hands of the Flyers, but he was noticeably shakier in Game 3, when he allowed 4 goals on 28 shots. For the series, Skinner owns a .873 SV% and 3.08 GAA.
The former Oiler came over in a mid-season goalie swap that saw Tristan Jarry dealt to Edmonton. Skinner has plenty of postseason experience, as he helped the Oilers reach each of the past two Stanley Cup Finals.
Muse hopes that Silovs can spark the start of what would be a historic comeback. The last team to tie the series after being down 3-0 was Skinner’s Oilers in the 2024 Cup Final. The last team to come back and win the series was in 2014, when the Los Angeles Kings beat San Jose in the first round on their way to their second Cup in three years.
