A couple of notable prospects are heading down to the minors to get some game action.
On Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins sent defensemen Harrison Brunicke and Jack St. Ivany down to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, for conditioning purposes.
The Penguins also assigned forward Philip Tomasino to the AHL, while calling up fellow forward Tristan Broz.

It has been a minute since Brunicke has seen game action. The Pens’ second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft was last in the lineup on Nov. 3 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Though he has played just nine games in his first full season as a pro, Brunicke potted his first NHL goal on Oct. 9 against the New York Islanders.
The South African-born blueliner has a plus/minus of -4 while averaging 15:43 of ice time per game.
While nothing is confirmed, there’s the belief that Brunicke will represent Canada at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship. The move down to the minors will allow him to see some game action in the lead-up to the tournament in the Twin Cities next month. The Seattle Kraken made a similar move during the 2022-23 season, sending Shane Wright down to the AHL prior to helping Canada win gold in Halifax that year.
St. Ivany has yet to see any game time this season. A lower-body injury suffered during a preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres in October knocked the 26-year-old out for the past seven weeks.
The Manhattan Beach, Calif. native has spent the last couple of seasons bouncing between Pittsburgh and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Last year, he posted an assist in 19 games with the big club, registering a plus/minus of -3 while averaging 16:22 of ice time per game. He also notched a career-high 16 points in 37 games with the AHL Penguins.
In over two years as a pro, Broz has yet to appear in an NHL game, having solely been with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton since finishing up his college career at the University of Denver. He’s had a strong start in the ‘A’ this year, scoring eight goals and 13 points in 18 games.
The Penguins (10-6-5) are scheduled to host the Sabres on Wednesday night.
