Pittsburgh Penguins games will never again sound the same.
Per the official NHL website, Pittsburgh Hall of Fame radio play-by-play announcer Mike Lange is retiring after spending 46 years as the voice of the Penguins. Lange will continue making sporadic appearances on the Penguins Radio Network after missing the majority of the 2020-21 season due to opting out because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"There are so many people to thank along the way," Lange, who became widely known for his colorful and unique sayings, said in a prepared statement. "From the terrific personnel at the arena all these years, ownership including the smaller investors who took a chance on this franchise, players who make it all possible and the management and all the staff members who are so memorable to me. I am very grateful for the chance to meet and work with you over the years. And to the fans: what a trip we had together. So many contributing to the broadcasts and listening night after night. Always made me 'Smile Like a Butcher's Dog.' God Bless."
Lange called all five of Pittsburgh's Stanley Cup victories, the most recent occurring in 2017. Josh Getzoff, who has replaced Lange for road games over the past several years, will become the club's full-time radio play-by-play broadcaster.
Lange first joined the Penguins in the 1974-75 season and was the franchise's television voice from 1979 through the 2005-06 campaign. The press box at Pittsburgh's PPG Paints Arena was named the "Mike Lange Media Level" in 2019.
