Penguins shutout state rival Flyers in season opener

OTTAWA-- Getting revenge always tastes sweet but nothing better then shutting out your state rivals in their arena on opening night and making a statement right away.

Dan Muse had his team ready to go as his Penguins rolled over Philadelphia and never looked back the entire game. The taste of the first round loss to these same Flyers months ago definitely was a big motivator as to the hard play and ruthless attack which was consistent throughout 60 minutes.

From Sidney Crosby becoming the longest tenured captain in Penguins history to Filip Hallander ending the night as the team's point leader says a lot about the group effort and culture of the team.

Nick Robertson makes an early impact on first line

Nick Robertson made his debut with the Penguins one to remember as he notched a two goal night including the team's first goal of the season. His skill set really seemed to work well with Sidney Crosby and Rickard Rakell and they fed off each other all game. Robertson scored, well let's say one of the more weirder shorthanded goals we may have seen in a while with Dan Vladar kicking it off his blade and in.

Robertson post game definitely threw some shade at his former club in Toronto and topped on how it feels refreshing to be given prime opportunities and playing time. He was sheltered in his time with the Maple Leafs and he will look to build off his performance heading into Saturday.

Third line of Hallander-Lapierre-Koivunen gets it done

What a debut by the guys both Dan Muse and Kyle Dubas believe in. Koivunen (The 32 million dollar man) scored a nifty breakaway goal, Hallander picked up some loose change in front, and Lapierre went short side. All three on the third line combined for a heavy amount of goalshare and goalshare pressure, along with three of the team's seven goals.

Filip Hallander who returned from a serious blood clot injury last season deserved every ounce of it last night and he showed that he belongs in the Penguins lineup. Both Ville Koivunen and new addition Hendrix Lapierre were synced up very nicely together.

Lapierre post game spoke on the culture and identity the Pittsburgh Penguins have since being acquired and even one game in felt pumped up to be with the guys.

In practice today the line seems intact as they will look to find more magic against Montreal.

It's an Arty Party in Philly

Arturs Silovs was stone cold between the pipes, stopping 19 of 19 Flyers shots and earning himself an opening night shutout. It's set a record for largest road shutout in a season opener in NHL history.

Silovs was tested at many points throughout the game despite the shot count, there were three Flyers power-plays where he had to stand tall at points and gave the Flyers very little.

Samuel Girard had easily his best game as a Pittsburgh Penguin as he seemed so comfortable out on the ice with his new defensive partner Kaedan Korczak. Both looked so coordinated as a pairing and they fed well into each others defensive-styles. They will be a pair to watch throughout the season if the pairing stays in tact. Girard played through a nagging injury last season which raised some questions when he started with the Penguins after being acquired for Brett Kulak.

Dan Muse changed the structure of the forwards when they enter the ozone and it appears less cute and fancy. Muse seems to have the guys finally simplifying the entrance which is making attacking and creating odd man rushes way easier then it looked last season.

Pittsburgh will have their home opener on Saturday against the Canadiens who opened up their season with a tight victory over the Maple Leafs.
