Penguins vs. Flyers: Rivalry Renewed
USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins pulled off one of their most impressive victories this season over the Tampa Bay Lightning, capped off by the first goal scored by a goaltender in team history. The win helped them keep pace in a crowded Metropolitan Division, but they still remain in the bottom half of teams. Luckily, the Penguins have the chance to leapfrog the standings with a pair of games against their biggest rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers. Here's what to watch for in first of two straight between the Pens and Flyers.

1. Ludvig Carving Out Role

The Penguins made a shrewd move when the claimed defenseman John Ludvig off of waivers. The 23-year-old is exactly what the Pittsburgh needs. He’s mobile, smart with the puck, and tough as nails. Since returning from a concussion, he’s been a valuable addition to the third pairing.

Heading into two games against Philadelphia, having Ludvig’s physical presence on hand will be needed. It’ll be worth watching how the youngster handles his first taste of one of the league’s best divisional rivalries.

2. Konecny Shining in Philly

Something the Philadelphia Flyers lack is an elite scorer like the Penguins possess. While the team spreads the offense around, they can count on Travis Konecny to continue leading the way. Coming off of his first career 30 goal season, he’s following it up with a slightly improve offensive pace. In 23 games, he has 12 goals and 18 points already. If the Penguins want to win against the Broad Street Bullies, they’ll need to eliminate Konecny as a factor.

3. Return of Big Jeff Carter?

While he began the season in and out of the lineup, veteran forward Jeff Carter has gone from outcast to productive since re-entering the lineup on November 19th. He’s been especially noticeable in the past three games, picking up his first goal and assist of the season.

In the final year of his contract and possibly his career, Carter’s game has steeply declined. In the calendar year of 2023, he’s produced a meager eight goals in 62 games. Despite the setbacks in his game, he’s finding a way lately to be productive. Facing his former team, Carter has an excellent opportunity to keep his recent offensive push going.

The Penguins and Flyers face-off at 7:00 p.m. at PPG Paints Arena.
