The Philadelphia Flyers have signed Cam York to a five-year contract extension worth $5.15 million per season. Cam York had 4 goals and 13 assists this past season. He ranked second among Flyers defensemen in on-ice time at over 20 minutes a game. This deal ensures he will be with the Flyers for years to come. The Flyers continue to push their rebuild mentality by extending York, who still has upside at age 24.
Like many players who have signed extensions with the salary cap rising, $5.1 million per season isn’t as steep a price tag as it seemed last offseason. For Cam York, he’s a guy who should continue to see his ice time go up. He’s put up two consecutive seasons of 20+ minutes on ice, which is impressive for someone at 24 years of age.
Defensemen always take longer to develop than forwards, and York only played in 66 games last year while battling injuries. In 2023-2024, he played all 82 games and was a 30-point defenseman. We have to assume that the Flyers think he’s that type of player and that last year was just an anomaly due to injuries. This contract for Cam York will look like a steal in a few seasons if he’s able to stay healthy and continue to progress.
The Flyers will have Rick Tocchet take over as Flyers head coach, and he should be able to bring a new culture to Philadelphia that was lacking under John Tortorella. He is not a bad coach, as he gets the most out of his team and expects them to play a very hard brand of hockey. But considering where the Flyers franchise was at, Tortorella didn’t seem like the best fit.
The Flyers seem to be prioritizing their young players, and Tortorella is the exact opposite of that philosophy. Rick Tocchet should be able to come in and encourage the Flyers’ young players and provide the playing time they need.
