Player Profile: Timo Meier

Timo Meier was born in Herisau, Switzerland, on October eighth, 1996. Meier played youth hockey for SC Herisau of Division One of the Swiss Regio League. Meier’s father, Charly, was the Director of Player Development while Timo played for SC Herisau. In 20 games for SC Herisau’s U17 team during the 2009-2010 season, Meier scored 15 goals and added nine assists in 20 games played. Meier then made a move to Pikes Oberthurgau of the Swiss Novizen Elite league. In 52 games across two seasons with Oberthurgau’s U17 team, Meier scored 30 goals and added 25 assists.

Meier played the 2015-16 season for Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. In 29 games, Meier scored 23 goals and added 28 assists. The Huskies won the Gilles-Corteau Trophy for the 2015-16 season after defeating the Shawinigan Cataractes in five games. In 18 playoff games, Meier scored 11 goals and added 12 assists.

Timo Meier drafted by the San Jose Sharks with the ninth pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft

Timo Meier was drafted by the San Jose Sharks with the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the third Swiss player drafted by the Sharks franchise. Meier is fluent in four languages (Swiss, French, English, and German). Meier is a physically dominant winger who could also play with skill. After being drafted by the Sharks, Meier played one season for the San Jose Barracuda of the American Hockey League. In 33 games for the Barracuda during the 2016-17 season, Meier scored 14 goals and added nine assists.

After joining the San Jose Sharks before the 2016-17 season, Meier scored three goals and added three assists in 34 games during his rookie season. In his first full season with the Sharks, Meier scored 21 goals and added 15 assists in 81 games played during the 2017-18 season. The Sharks made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the first four seasons that Meier played for them. However, the Sharks lost to the St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference Finals in six games. In those six games, Meier scored two goals and added three assists.

In 77 games played for the Sharks during the 2021-22 season, Meier scored 35 goals and added 41 assists. These 35 goals are still a career high for the 29-year-old. However, the Sharks were in a playoff drought during this time. A Timo Meier move signaled a rebuild rather than a retool for the Sharks. Timo Meier traded to the New Jersey Devils

Meier scored 154 goals and added 162 assists for the San Jose Sharks in 451 games before being traded to the Devils. Meier was traded to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for forwards Fabian Zetterlund and Andreas Johnsson, defensemen Shakir Mukhamadullin and Nikita Okhotiuk. The Sharks also received a conditional first-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and a second- and seventh-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. Meier scored two goals and added two assists in 11 playoff games for the Devils during the postseason.

“I’m kind of your typical power forward,” Meier said. “I like to shoot the puck and try to get to the net, those areas where I can be a threat to score. I like to play a 200-foot game and add my physicality…I’m going to try to be the best Timo Meier I can be for the New Jersey Devils.” In his first season with the Devils, Meier scored 28 goals and added 24 assists in 69 games played. Multiple injuries cut Meier’s season short.

After being drafted by the San Jose Sharks with the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NHL draft, Meier has turned himself into a surprising offensive talent. Meier has played in nearly 700 games in 10 seasons. In those 700 games, Meier has scored more than 240 goals. In the three seasons that Meier has played with the New Jersey Devils, he has scored 78 goals.

Meier is going into year four of the eight-year, $70.4 million contract that he signed with the Devils before the 2023-24 season. Playing in 69 games during this season, Meier scored 28 goals and added 24 assists.  In 77 games played for the New Jersey Devils during the 2025-26 season, Meier scored 24 goals and added 20 assists. The Devils have made the playoffs twice during Meier’s time with the team. Recent reports have indicated that the Devils are looking to add defenseman Quinn Hughes.
