Predators claim Tyson Jost off waivers from Hurricanes

The Nashville Predators have claimed forward Tyson Jost off of waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes.

None of the other 21 players placed on waivers on Tuesday were claimed.

Jost found himself on waivers after being one of the many odd men out in the Hurricanes lineup, as their ever-growing depth up front made it almost impossible to make the team. Jost was one of four forwards the Canes had placed on waivers, joining Noel Gunler, Josiah Slavin and Ryan Suzuki.

Jost joins a Predators team a bit more in need of forward depth, especially with Luke Evangelista still without a contract and the recent announcement that 2023 15th-overall pick Matthew Wood is out on a week-to-week basis with a lower-body injury. While Jost is not guaranteed a spot in the lineup, he’ll likely be in contention for a fourth-line role.

Jost got into 39 games with the Hurricanes last season, where he had four goals and five assists for nine points. While he has struggled to drive offense in recent seasons with a -0.033 5v5 regularized adjusted plus-minus expected goals for per 60 minutes, his defensive game is still solid with a -0.024 5v5 RAPM expected goals against per 60.

Jost also got into 14 games with Carolina’s AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, where he had an identical stat line of four goals, five assists and nine points.

Jost had re-signed with the Hurricanes over the summer to a one-year, $775,000 contract.

Jost was the 10th-overall selection by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2016 NHL Draft, and after playing the following season with the University of North Dakota, he began his NHL career at the end of that season.

After six seasons in Colorado, he was dealt to the Minnesota Wild for Nico Sturm in 2022. He spent less than a year in Minnesota before he was claimed on waivers by the Buffalo Sabres, where he spent the next two years until signing with the Hurricanes in 2024.
