Projecting Patrick Kane’s next NHL contract
Patrick Kane (? Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports)

Patrick Kane signed a one-year deal worth $2.75 million with the Detroit Red Wings in November 2023, and wound up having a surprisingly productive season, scoring 20 goals and 27 assists for 47 points in 50 games.

Despite only playing just over half the 2023-24 campaign, Kane finished sixth on the team in scoring, and was able to help boost the performance of players like Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, David Perron and more. Not only that, but his pure skill and ability to make something on the power play provide value for a team looking to boost their production with the extra attacker.

Now a free agent as we head into the offseason, the question now becomes: how much is Kane worth, and how many years would you give him? While he’s still a productive winger, he’s slowed down in recent years, and having hip surgery this time last year may scare some teams from signing him for more than one season.

On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and former NHL defenseman Colby Cohen discuss Kane’s next contract in the #AskDFO segment and if it’s worth it for a team to bring in the 35-year-old winger.

Frank Seravalli: What kind of contract would you give Patrick Kane?

Colby Cohen: I think I’d be willing to give him two years at $4 million per season. I don’t think I would go any higher than that, based off the age. He was at around a point per game, and he was coming off hip surgery, so I think he’ll be a better player next season.

But it has to be the right fit. When he’s around, his aura is very large: who has to have the puck on the power play, who has to be out there in certain situations. I’d be careful.
