A player who does not do one individual thing that sticks out more than another, Quinn Beauchesne’s game progressively got better as the season went on. In the offensive zone, Beauchesne has no problem getting involved in the play from his point spot. He quickly activates from his spot, whether along the boards or into the center of the ice, to move toward the net for a shot or play on the puck. Even though he gets involved heavily from his point spot, the offensive numbers did not fully match his involvement.
What stands out the most about Beauchesne is his speed. His quickness and explosiveness help him get involved in the offensive zone, and if he finds himself having to recover, he can do so thanks to his skating. This also ties into his defensive game, where Beauchesne stands out. His skating ability and defensive IQ allow him to take away angles, time, and space from his opponents. He is a strong defender, whether on a rush or in the defensive zone.
Beauchesne’s game has progressed throughout the season when he has the puck on his stick in his zone. Toward the beginning of the season, he tended to force or rush plays that were detrimental and led to turnovers and chances for his opponents. But as the season went on, he seemed to slow things down and wait for a lane or the right play to make. If he can continue to work on this aspect of his game, the offensive production could make strides.
With not being a “standout” in any significant aspect of his game, his ceiling at the NHL level may be looked at as not as high as some other players in this year’s draft. With the skillset he does have, though, he should be a second to third-round pick.
“Mobility is the name of the game for Beauchesne. He’s very quick and loves to join in on the rush, so you can always count on him finding open space. I also think he makes some excellent long-range passes and isn’t afraid to take risks. Sometimes, though, the risks can get him into trouble, but there’s a ton of pure, raw skill here.” – Steven Ellis, Daily Faceoff
“On the defensive end, he uses his sturdy frame to calmly absorb contact while protecting the puck before finding the outlet. He is also an excellent shot blocker with great timing, getting in lanes consistently without sacrificing positioning. Beauchesne will need to continue to fine-tune his decision-making and limit mistakes.” – Donesh Mazloum, Future Considerations
Beauchesne’s defensive game and speed should help him be on a second or third defensive pairing in the NHL. If he can develop his offensive game even more, he could become a dependable second-pair player.
