Quinn Hughes to New Jersey This Offseason Still Possible?

The Quinn Hughes experiment in Minnesota went about as well as the Wild could have hoped when they swung the blockbuster deal to acquire him, but uncertainty around how much longer it will last remains.

Hughes has said all the right things when it comes to extending his stay in Minnesota, however, until he officially puts pen to paper on a deal, speculation will linger about him leaving—especially for the New Jersey Devils to play with brothers Jack and Luke.

Because of that, team reporter James Nichols recently outlined a potential trade package that new Devils GM Sunny Mehta should be willing to part with to reunite the Hughes brothers.

Nichols wrote:

“A deal that actually gets Minnesota’s attention might look something like: Devils send: Nico Hischier, Simon Nemec (or Anton Silayev), a first-rounder this year, and maybe another piece. Devils get: Quinn Hughes.

It’s a massive offer. You’re giving up your captain and a young NHL defenseman that has a top-four ceiling. However, you’re getting arguablly the best defenseman in the NHL. And the Wild have been craving a legitimate center for years,”

The 26-year-old Hughes will, of course, be entering the sixth and final year of the six-year, $47.1 million extension he signed with the Vancouver Canucks back in 2021, making him eligible to ink a new extension come July 1, 2026.

If Hughes does not show enough interest in extending with the Wild, then turning to New Jersey would make a lot of sense given that it is likely his preferred destination

A return centered around Hischier, a young defenseman like Nemec or Silayev, and draft capital is about as strong a package as GM Bill Guerin could realistically hope for in that scenario—though he is certainly hoping it never comes to that.

Nonetheless, Hughes’ contract situation will be one of the most prevalent topics to watch as the offseason approaches, and you can be sure Mehta has his eyes on it.
