The New York Rangers were dealt bad news on the Matt Rempe front after he left a game injured of late.

According to the latest update, New York will be without their forward for the foreseeable future after he was injured during a heavyweight fight with San Jose Sharks enforcer Ryan Reaves last week.

The incident occurred just six minutes into Thursday’s 6-5 overtime loss to San Jose at Madison Square Garden.

Head coach Mike Sullivan confirmed Tuesday that the 23-year-old will be out “longer term” with an upper-body injury, per the New York Post's Mollie Walker.

During the game against the Sharks, Rempe dropped the gloves with Reaves after a hit on Juuso Parssinen, engaging in an exchange of punches that lasted nearly half a minute before officials intervened.

Reaves finished the bout in the penalty box, while Rempe went straight to the locker room with the training staff and did not return.

“He’s a big boy and you have to fight guys like that a little bit differently,” Reaves said after the game. “I’ve seen him fight, so I know what he’s good at, what his weaknesses are. It was a good tilt.”

Sullivan said Rempe’s absence will extend beyond the team’s current four-game road trip, though it is not considered season-ending, per The Hockey News' Remy Mastey.

Following these comments, Rempe should be expected to miss several games, potentially a few weeks, while rehabbing the injury.

Rempe’s injury is a setback for the Rangers’ physical game under coach Sullivan. The 6-foot-9, 261-pound forward only has one point through nine games this season, but he continues to play an important bottom-six role as one of the league’s most imposing enforcers.

Making up for Rempe's absence, the Rangers recalled Brennan Othmann from AHL Hartford for their road trip.
