The future of Artemi Panarin with the New York Rangers remains uncertain as he approaches the completion of his contract on July 1.
The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta said he believes the Rangers could consider moving him as early as late February.
That, however, would depend on where the Rangers sit in the standings after the Olympic break and just days before the March 6, 2026, trade deadline.
Pagnotta appeared on "Oilersnation Everyday" on Wednesday and said that he believes the Rangers don’t want to risk losing Panarin for nothing when his contract expires next summer, thus potentially entering trade discussions before next calendar year's deadline.
David Pagnotta: Re Artemi Panarin rumours: If they're a bubble fringe team after the Olympics...it wouldn't shock me if they take a serious look at pulling something off here - Oilersnation Everyday (10/15)

“I don’t think they really want to be in a position to lose a player like that for nothing, when there are teams that would love to get their hands on him,” Pagnotta said. “If they’re a bubble fringe team after the Olympics, it wouldn’t shock me if they take a serious look at pulling something off here.”
Pagnotta, appearing on "The Sheet" on Friday, also questioned Panarin’s commitment to staying in New York long term, noting that the veteran forward hasn’t expressed interest in taking a discount to remain a Ranger.
“What’s Artemi Panarin thinking right now? 'Do I wanna stay there? Would I take a team-friendly deal?' Doesn’t sound like it,” Pagnotta said.
A potential trade would mark another major step in the Rangers’ ongoing roster overhaul, following recent moves involving Jacob Trouba, Chris Kreider and K’Andre Miller.
Pagnotta said the situation could hinge on whether Drury can find a trade partner willing to take on Panarin’s $11.6 million cap hit, or whether Panarin would be willing to sign a lower-money extension before the deadline.
Panarin led New York with 89 points last season and remains one of the NHL’s top playmakers, with six points in seven games this year.
The Rangers, however, have had a mediocre start to the season, putting together a 3-3-1 record through seven games.
