NEW YORK, N.Y. — The New York Rangers defeated the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on Tuesday night, snapping a four-game losing streak.
In what was Dylan Garand’s 11th straight appearance in goal for NYR, he was able to secure his first win since October 19 against Anaheim.
The Rangers were buzzing out of the gate, controlling most of the possession to start the game. The top line of Pavel Dorofeyev, Mika Zibanejad, and Alexis Lafrenière looked a lot faster than in previous games.
Garand had to make a couple of important saves early but was able to stand tall.
At 7:44 of the first period, Scott Morrow was sent to the box for high-sticking, putting St. Louis on the power play.
The Rangers were able to kill the penalty, and the game remained scoreless.
At 11:29 of the first period, Jaroslav Chmelar, who was recalled on Monday, was sent to the box for hooking, giving the Blues their second power play of the game.
NYR once again kept the game scoreless.
The tide finally turned when Theo Lindstein was called for tripping, putting NYR on its first power play of the game.
New York made a change to its power-play units, as Gabe Perreault was moved to Power Play One while J.T. Miller was sent down to Power Play Two.
The move was not a demotion for Miller but rather a chance for the Rangers to mix things up with the man advantage.
Penalty troubles continued for the Blueshirts as J.T. Miller took a high-sticking penalty with less than a minute remaining in the period.
Despite three penalties against the Rangers, the period ended scoreless, with St. Louis carrying an abbreviated power play into the second.
Almost two minutes into the second period, Tye Kartye attempted to split two defenders after receiving a breakout pass from Miller. After being stopped, Kartye found a trailing Adam Fox in the slot, who scored to give NYR a 1-0 lead.
Both teams had their fair share of chances in the second period, with the Rangers having the majority of them. However, both goalies made some key saves to keep the game low-scoring.
At 15:20 of the period, the Rangers went back on the power play for the second time as Jake Neighbours was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for tripping.
Unfortunately, NYR was unable to double its lead with the man advantage, and the game remained 1-0.
Late in the period, with 1:42 remaining, Noah Laba was called for slashing, marking New York’s fourth penalty of the game.
The second period ended with the Rangers leading 1-0, with 18 seconds remaining on the penalty clock heading into the third period.
After killing off the remainder of the penalty, NYR went back on the power play as Connor McMichael was called for holding. This was the seventh penalty between the two teams.
The Rangers didn’t generate much on the power play, and the penalties kept coming as Mika Zibanejad was penalized for hooking at 4:42.
At 9:01, Bjorkstrand went tic-tac-toe with Cuylle and Tolvanen to put NYR up 2-0. This was Bjorkstrand’s sixth goal of the season and Eeli Tolvanen’s 100th career assist.
Gabe Perreault scored a goal that was called back due to a distinct kicking motion.
Eeli Tolvanen scored an empty-net goal to seal the victory, and NYR went on to win 3-1 after a late goal from Blues forward Pius Suter.
The Rangers’ next game will come Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers at Madison Square Garden. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
