Matt Rempe has spent the offseason reshaping his game — and his reputation. The 23-year-old New York Rangers winger, long tagged as a pure enforcer, said his summer training was aimed at proving he can be a power forward who contributes well beyond fights.
Rempe talked to The Athletic's Vincent Mercogliano in an interview published Wednesday, and discussed his daily schedule throughout the offseason, shortly after revealing his plans for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
“I want to turn into not being known as an enforcer,” Rempe said, via Newsday’s Colin Stephenson. “I want to be turned into, ‘This guy’s a really good young power forward … who also can fight.’”
Rempe laid out a rigorous routine that starts at 7 a.m. in White Plains, New York, every day before he heads to trainer Ben Prentiss’ facility in Stamford.
Matt Rempe decided to spend the full offseason in the NY/CT area to maximize his training and walked me through what those summer days looked like.

“Chef makes me five eggs with sourdough (bread) and yogurt,” Rempe said. “I gotta wake up (early) to get that down if I don’t want to throw up during the workout.”
By 9 a.m. the day of the interview, Rempe was in the gym with teammates Adam Fox and Jonny Brodzinski and other NHLers, including former Ranger Chris Kreider.
Two or three times a week, Mercogliano wrote that Rempe goes through conditioning sessions on stationary bikes linked to oxygen machines.
“It’s hard moving a lot of weight, so a big thing for me was getting my lungs better,” Rempe said.
Afternoons are usually used for skating drills at the Rangers’ facility with coaches Dawn Braid and Christian Hmura. Fridays come loaded with sprint skates with weighted belts, while Saturdays are what Rempe calls “meathead workouts.”
“We’d just do arms,” Rempe said. “It was sweet. We’d just be ripping curls.”
Rempe also made clear in his conversation with Stephenson that he wants to distance himself from staged fights.
“I want to be done with ‘stage fighting,’” Rempe said. “If I’m being so effective that I have to fight because I’ve had eight real great hits in a game, or something like that, then I’ll do that. But me going to a game and just fight someone, that’s not helping me.”
Rempe is entering the first season of a two-year, $1.95 million deal signed last June, and so far has appeared in 59 career games, scoring 10 points but racking up 138 penalty minutes.
