Rangers re-sign goaltender Alexandar Georgiev

The New York Rangers confirmed on Thursday that they've come to terms on an agreement with restricted free agent goaltender Alexandar Georgiev. Specifics of the deal weren't released by the club.

Georgiev, who turns 25 next February, joined the Rangers as a free agent in July 2017 coming from TPS Turku of Liiga in Finland. He's played in 77 games with 71 starts across his NHL career and tallied a career 35-31-7 regular-season record with a 3.00 goals-against average, .913 save percentage and four shutouts. 

In 34 games during the pandemic-altered season, Georgiev posted a 17-14-2 record with a 3.04 GAA and .910 save percentage. He was below both veteran Henrik Lundqvist and Igor Shesterkin during the summer NHL resumption and is expected to serve as a backup for Shesterkin when the upcoming campaign begins. 

The Rangers bought out Lundqvist, 38, in September so he could enter free agency. He ultimately signed a one-year contract reportedly worth $1.5 million with the Washington Capitals earlier this month. 

Across his final two years with the Rangers, Lundqvist accumulated a 3.12 GAA and .906 save percentage in 82 regular-season games. He won the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the man voted the league's best goaltender, for the 2011-12 season.
