Reason Why Canucks' Brock Boeser Was Not Traded Revealed

The Vancouver Canucks ultimately kept Brock Boeser at the trade deadline even though they couldn't agree to a contract extension with the pending free-agent forward.

With the deadline nearly a week in the rearview mirror, the reason behind Vancouver's decision has emerged.

According to NHL insider Darren Dreger, the Canucks kept Boeser after failing to receive an offer that met their asking price, as he reported on TSN's "OverDrive" on Wednesday.

Despite weeks of speculation, no team put a first-round pick on the table, which was a key factor in Vancouver’s decision.

“The problem with all that is—and I get it, I do understand it—they had flies swarming around Brock Boeser, but nothing that was even tangible,” Dreger said. “Zero first-round picks on the table.

”I heard that they had somebody nibbling at a second-round pick, and then that team bailed.”

Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin had already confirmed Dreger's information, revealing that the offers for Boeser were underwhelming.

“If I told you what I was offered for Brock Boeser, I think I would have to run out of here,” Allvin said Friday. “Because you would not believe me.”

Boeser, who is in the final season of a three-year, $19.95 million contract, will become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Vancouver made Boeser a five-year, $40 million offer earlier in the season, but both sides failed to reach an agreement.

The franchise won't be able to re-sign the 28-year-old player until the end of the playoffs before he enters the market on July 1.

Boeser has scored 18 goals and notched 20 assists for 38 total points this season after posting a career-high 40 goals last year.

Speaking about the contract situation in an interview with Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre ahead of the deadline, Boeser made it clear that he won't have a problem entering free agency.

“We all know the three options that could happen before the deadline: trade, re-sign, or neither,” Boeser said. “If nothing happens and July 1 comes around, I still think I’m in a good spot.”
