Recap: Blackhawks blow out Blues 7-3
Matt Marton-Imagn Images

The Chicago Blackhawks looked to continue their undefeated 2026 when they hosted the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday night at the United Center. For the first time this season, the Hawks have won three straight as they sought to avenge a 3-2 loss to the Blues in St. Louis on Dec. 12, which was the game Connor Bedard suffered an injured shoulder. Jordan Binnington started in goal for the Blues while the Hawks went with Spencer Knight between the pipes. A win would put the Hawks back at the .500 mark just past the midway point of the season.

First period

Tyler Tucker needed just 27 seconds to give the Blues an early 1-0 lead. Brayden Schenn gathered a loose puck behind the net and fed a pinching Tucker, who knocked it in for his second of the season.

The Hawks answered with a power-play goal by Nick Lardis. Oliver Moore faked a shot from the right circle and fired a pass to Lardis, who buried a one-timer for his third of the season at 9:26 to tie it at 1-1.

The game would remain tied after one period.

Second period

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead when Moore scored his fourth of the season on the power play and his first goal in 17 games. Matt Grzelcyk fired a shot from the point that was stopped by Bimnington, but Nick Foligno outworked the Blues’ defenders to get it back to Grzelcyk, who fed Moore just below the right circle and fired a wrist shot off Binnington’s glove at 7:41.

The lead did not last long, as Otto Stenberg scored his first NHL goal. Artyom Levshunov attempted a pass to Landon Slaggert, but it went off his skate and right to Stenberg, who fired a top-shelf shot at 8:22 to tie it at 2-2.

The Hawks quickly regained the lead when Connor Murphy powered a shot past Binnington for his first of the season at 8:57. Chicago took a 3-2 lead.

Slaggert extended the Hawks’ lead to 4-2 with his second of the season. Murphy gathered the puck at the point and fed Colton Dach, who fired it from the point and Slaggert tipped it in at 12:27.

The Hawks took a 5-2 lead on Jason Dickinson’s fifth of the season. The Hawks won a board battle and the puck landed on Louis Crevier’s stick at the point. Crevier shot it and Dickinson tipped it in at 17:24.

The Hawks would take a three-goal lead into the second intermission.

Third period

With the Hawks on a 5-on-3 power play, Andre Burakovsky snapped a wrist shot past Binnington for his 10th of the season. Ryan Greene and Burakovsky played catch with the puck and eventually Burakovaky shot it in off the post to give Chicago a 6-2 lead.

Crevier hits the proverbial extra point with his fourth of the season to give the Hawks a 7-2 lead. Slaggert’s shot from the point was stopped by Binnington but he left a bouncing rebound that Crevier swatted in on the doorstep at 12:56.

The Blues cut it to 7-3 when Nathan Walker scored his fourth of the season at 13:19. Alexey Toropchenko made a cross-ice pass to Walker, who drove to the net and deflected it up in the air then followed through by batting the puck in mid air into the net. That would be the final goal of the game as the Hawks picked up their fourth straight win.

Analysis

The Hawks turned an early deficit into a dominant performance with contributions throughout the lineup. Special teams played a huge factor as the Hawks killed two straight overlapping Blues power plays then proceeded to pick up three power-play goals of their own to stay red hot with the man advantage. The Hawks are rolling and will get some reinforcements soon with Connor Bedard, who is now listed as day-to-day, potentially returning as early as this weekend. The Blackhawks stay at home to host the Washington Capitals on Friday night. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. CST on CHSN with a national telecast on NHL Network and the radio call on WGN AM 720.
