Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Kane will miss Sunday’s home game against the Edmonton Oilers with an upper-body injury suffered late in Friday’s 2-1 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Kane was slow to get up after crashing into the boards during the final minutes of Friday’s game and did not return for overtime.
Head coach Todd McLellan confirmed on Saturday that the 36-year-old veteran will not be available as the team continues to evaluate his condition.
“He’ll continue to be evaluated,” McLellan said. “We’ll have an update on him as we go forward.”

The injury comes with the winger off to a strong start to his third season with Detroit, posting two goals and three assists through five games.
Three of those points have come on the power play, where Kane remains one of the Red Wings’ most reliable playmakers.
McLellan also provided an update on fellow forward Lucas Raymond, who remains sidelined with his own upper-body injury.
“I think he’s getting closer,” McLellan said. “We stayed out, did a little extra, so we’ll see how he feels after practice and in the morning.”
If Raymond returns to the lineup, he should reclaim his spot on the Red Wings' top line playing alongside Dylan Larkin and Emmitt Finnie.
In Kane’s absence, the Red Wings could move bottom-six forward Mason Appleton into a top-six role or use James van Riemsdyk on the power play to help fill Kane's gap.
Detroit has won four straight games after dropping its season opener to the Montreal Canadiens, and will look to extend that streak Sunday afternoon against the defending back-to-back Western Conference champion Oilers. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
