Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman held his end-of-season media availability on Tuesday, sitting next to head coach Todd McClellan and touching on multiple topics.

One of those had to do with upcoming free agent forward Patrick Kane, whose time in Detroit may be far from over.

Yzerman confirmed during his end-of-season press conference that both sides are interested in a new deal.

“We had a brief discussion in our meeting,” Yzerman said. “We would preferably try to get some things in place, if we can, early. If not, we’ll figure out something down the road.

“But there’s strong mutual interest on both parties. I know Patrick had suggested it in his time up here with the media. I’m optimistic.”

Kane, 36, wrapped up his second season in Detroit with 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points in 72 games. He ranked fourth in total points among his teammates as well as third in assists, all of that despite battling through injuries and missing 10 games.

Kane's current totals with the Red Wings stand at 41 goals and 65 assists for 106 points over 122 games, which translates to a 71-point pace over a full 82-game season.

“He played well for us, played an important role for us,” Yzerman said. “He’s a very professional guy in his approach and his attitude. He’s a good asset for us.”

Kane signed a one-year deal worth $4 million plus bonuses last offseason. He told reporters on April 19 that he’s open to returning but wants to take his time.

“Those are conversations that still need to be had with myself, my family, people closest to me, my agent, and obviously with the organization,” Kane said. “But I thought it worked well for both sides.”

Kane, who has the third-most points among American-born NHL players, now sits at 1,343 career points in 1,302 games. He said his personal goal is to reach 1,500 games and continue playing for “a few more years.”
