Red Wings Notebook: Goals, Wins Both Drying Up

A number of potential concerns areas for the Detroit Red Wings coming into the NHL season are rearing their ugly heads during the club’s 1-3 start. One that figured to be problematic and is in fact proving to be so is the club’s sudden inability to put the puck in the other team’s net.

When 75 goals from last season’s lineup left via trades or free agency, it was certainly worrisome. Where would the goals come from this season? However, as Detroit was scoring six times over the first two games of the season, those fears subsided.

Turns out, it was only a temporary reprise. In the last two games, the Red Wings have scored three goals. There are 14 players on the roster with less goals than Minnesota Wild goalie Filipp Gustavsson this season. Among the Detroit players still seeking their first tallty of the season are key performers such as Patrick Kane, Lucas Raymond and Jonatan Berggren.

All are being counted on to help pick up the slack in the red light district.

Panarin Outscores All Red Wings

In Thursday’s 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers, New York forward Artemi Panarin scored more goals (three) than any Red Wings player has tallied all season.

JT Compher, one of three Red Wings with a team-leading two goals, is taking an Alfred E Neuman approach to the struggling offense. Wha, me worry is his response.

“Yeah, I don’t think there’s any doubt about the offense in our room,” Compher said. “We got plenty of guys that can score in our locker room.”

Worst Start In Six Years

Their 1-3 record is the worst start to a Red Wings season since the 2018-19 campaign. That year saw Detroit stumble from the gates 0-5-2. The team ended up 32-40-10, missing the playoffs.

It’s just the second time in 30 years that the club has found itself with a losing record four games into a season. In 1993-94, the Wings opened 1-5.
