Detroit Red Wings forward Chase Stillman has recovered from his preseason injury. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Red Wings have placed Stillman on waivers, indicating he’s healthy to begin his season with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
Suffice it to say, Stillman hasn’t lived up to his status as a first-round pick. The New Jersey Devils selected Stillman with the 29th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. Still, he would not begin playing for the organization until the 2023-24 season.
Although he has never produced much offensively, even back in his OHL tenure, Stillman has intriguing qualities for a forward. He can seamlessly play on all four forward lines and has an extremely high motor that runs through the whistle every shift. Unfortunately, his high-energy play hasn’t been enough to overcome his lack of production at the professional level.
He had a decent rookie season with the AHL’s Utica Comets, scoring 14 goals and 24 points in 54 games with a -2 rating. Unfortunately, Stillman took a step back the following season, only registering three goals and nine points in 46 contests. Eventually, New Jersey traded Stillman to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the package that brought Cody Glass to the Devils. He concluded the campaign scoring one goal and three points in nine games for the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Stillman didn’t last long in the Penguins organization. Four months after acquiring him, Pittsburgh traded Stillman to the Vancouver Canucks for netminder Arturs Silovs. In a stroke of bad luck, Stillman’s 2025-26 campaign, spent entirely with the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks, was prematurely ended after suffering a broken fibula.
If Stillman passes through waivers, he’ll play for the fourth organization of his young career. The Griffins were one of the best teams in the AHL last season, finishing with a 51-16-4 record, joining the Providence Bruins and WBS Penguins as the only teams to eclipse the 100-point plateau.
