One of the largest players in the NHL has signed a nice little deal.

On Wednesday, the Detroit Red Wings announced that the team has re-signed forward Elmer Soderblom to a two-year contract. The deal carries an AAV of $1.125 million through the 2026-27 season.

Soderblom just came to the end of his entry-level contract, which he signed with the Red Wings in June 2022. That deal had an AAV of $925,000. The 23-year-old will become a restricted free agent at the end of his new contract.

Soderblom has been with the Red Wings since the team took him in the sixth round, 159th overall, of the 2019 NHL Draft. Though he wasn’t regarded as a top prospect, the Swedish winger managed to work his way onto the main roster to begin the 2022-23 season.

Yet, Detroit’s brass realized the 6-foot-8 behemoth needed some more time to develop, sending him down to the franchise’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. Over parts of the next couple of seasons, Soderblom started to find his legs and develop into a solid player. While many believed he needed more time in the minors, injuries and lackluster play led to Soderblom getting called back up to the Red Wings this past season, and he never looked back.

In 26 games in Detroit in 2024-25, the 23-year-old scored four goals and seven assists for 11 points before an injury forced him to be shut down for the rest of the regular season. He was able to return to Grand Rapids for the Calder Cup Playoffs, playing in three games before the team was eliminated by the Texas Stars.

In 47 total NHL appearances, he’s notched nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points. In 119 AHL games, Soderblom has registered 23 goals and 31 assists for 54 points, with two points coming in 10 postseason games.
