The legend of Sergei Fedorov was never going to die among fans of the Detroit Red Wings, but the team made him immortalization official Monday when they retired his No. 91 jersey before their home game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

The ceremony comes as part of the Red Wings’ season-long centennial celebration, honoring the teams 100th year since its founding in 1926.

Along with the likes of Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, and Niklas Lidstrom, Fedorov was one of the key figures in Detroit’s dynasty of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Russian centerman won three Stanley Cups with the Red Wings, along with the Hart Trophy in 1994 as the NHL’s most valuable player, and two Selke Trophies (1994, 1996) as the league’s best defensive forward.

Initially drafted by Detroit in the fourth round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, Fedorov joined the Red Wings for the 1990-91 season after defecting from the then Soviet Union with aid from the Red Wings themselves. He immediately established himself as one of the leagues best young forwards, putting up 31 goals and 48 assists for 79 points in 77 games as a rookie. He would go on to become one of the defining players of the 1990s, and will be remembered as part of the first wave of Russian stars to make their way to the NHL, along with Alexander Mogilny and Pavel Bure. He was also a part of the Red Wings legendary “Russian Five”, along with Vladimir Konstantinov, Slava Kozlov, Slava Fetisov, and Igor Larionov.

With 400 goals and 554 assists for 954 points in 908 career games with Red Wings, Fedorov ranks sixth all-time in scoring in the history of Detroit’s storied franchise. His 1.051 points per game with the Red Wings ranks fourth all-time in team history. Fedorov was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015.
