The Red Wings are keeping one of their depth forwards around for a little while longer. The team announced (Twitter link) that they’ve signed winger Austin Watson to a one-year, two-way contract extension. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The 33-year-old earned a contract for this season via the PTO route after spending training camp with Detroit. He did well enough to earn a one-year, two-way pact that pays $775K in the NHL and $200K in the minors. However, it hasn’t earned him much NHL action this season as he has been limited to just two appearances with the big club, both coming back in October where he was held off the scoresheet in seven minutes of playing time per night.
Instead, Watson has spent the bulk of the campaign with AHL Grand Rapids, his first extended taste of action in the minors since the 2014-15 campaign when he was a prospect with Nashville. In 51 games with the Griffins, he has 12 goals and 19 assists along with 91 penalty minutes.
In his career, Watson has 517 NHL appearances under his belt over parts of 11 seasons where he has 118 points, 707 penalty minutes, and 1,215 hits. While he could have tested free agency again this summer and potentially changed organizations for the fourth straight year, he’ll now stay with the Red Wings where he’ll likely remain as a veteran option in Grand Rapids.

Surging Canadiens put win streak on line vs. Flyers
Nick Suzuki has dented the scoresheet in each contest since being held without a point in the Montreal Canadiens' season-opening game. The Canadiens' captain will carry a career-high 11-game points streak into Tuesday's contest against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers. Entering play on Monday with an NHL-best 16 assists, Suzuki set up a pair of goals in Montreal's 4-3 overtime victory over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Suzuki's stretch pass found Cole Caufield to open the scoring on Saturday, allowing the latter to boost his team-leading goal total to 10 with his fifth in his last four games. The duo became the first set of Canadiens teammates since 1995-96 to both reach the 15-point mark within their first 12 games since Pierre Turgeon and Mark Recchi in 1995-96. Juraj Slafkovsky, who is the third member of the top line, scored a power-play goal for the third straight game on Saturday. Alex Newhook scored on a breakaway in the extra session, sending the Canadiens to their third win in a row overall. They also became the first team in NHL history to record five overtime wins through a club's first 12 games of a season. "It's crazy how we just keep doing this and our star players step up for us every time," Montreal defenseman Jayden Struble said, per the Montreal Gazette. "When we're down it doesn't feel like we're down. It's like: All right, someone's going to score and send it to OT and then someone's going to win it. It's a crazy thing to be a part of right now. "It's very fun and I love the way that we're playing." While struggling Sam Montembeault made 14 saves on Saturday, fellow goaltender Jakub Dobes likely will put his perfect record on the line against Philadelphia. Dobes is 6-0-0 with a 1.97 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage this season. Dobes, however, was gashed for six goals on 30 shots in his lone career encounter with the Flyers in a 6-4 setback on March 27. Philadelphia captain Sean Couturier and Matvei Michkov each collected two goals and an assist in that game. The Flyers' Tyson Foerster also tallied in that contest however he blocked a shot with his skate in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs and sat out Sunday's 2-1 setback to the Calgary Flames. He is expected to "miss a few games," per head coach Rick Tocchet. The fiery Tocchet also was none-too-pleased with Philadelphia's two losses over the weekend, especially on the heels of a promising 5-1-0 stretch. "You've got to keep pounding it, and we've got to find people who want to continue to do it," Tocchet said. "We'll find them. But it's my job to get these guys to do it. "It's hard to win in this league. You want to play in April and May, you've got to play hard hockey. I think we're finding easy ice. A lot of guys, even some of our best players, they want to play the easy ice and not the hard ice." New Flyers forward Trevor Zegras saw his four-game point streak (four goals, four assists) come to a halt on Saturday.
Chiefs have a no-brainer trade target after loss vs. Bills
The last time the Kansas City Chiefs lost four games in a season, they went on to make the Super Bowl and beat the San Francisco 49ers. Six years have passed since, and Andy Reid's team will have to make some adjustments to replicate that fortune. That's especially evident after another heartbreaking regular-season loss to the Buffalo Bills, which exposed what might be the Chiefs' biggest flaw on offense: a lack of an explosive running game. That's why they need to pick up the phone and reach out to the New York Jets to trade for Breece Hall. Chiefs need to trade for Breece Hall According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Jets are more than open to trading Hall, who's in the final year of his contract. "The Jets have been getting calls on RB Breece Hall for a while, and while there is interest, New York is looking for at least a third-round pick in return," wrote Russini. Hall is just 24 years old, and while he had a major injury as a rookie, he's been pretty durable since. This season, he's up to 117 carries for 581 rushing yards and two touchdowns, averaging 5.0 yards per carry. He also has 21 receptions on 30 targets for 178 receiving yards. The Chiefs average 121.2 rushing yards per game, the 12th most in the NFL. That's with Patrick Mahomes accounting for one-third of their rushing yards, though. Neither Isiah Pacheco — who's currently out with an injury — nor Kareem Hunt has been efficient, and rookie Brashard Smith might not be ready to take on a bigger role. The Chiefs ran for just 79 yards against a Bills defense that gives up the fourth-most rushing yards per game (141.4), and Hall could certainly fix those woes.

Since the renaissance of Sam Darnold’s career in Minnesota last season, one of the reputational issues the veteran needed to shake was his play in primetime. Against the Washington Commanders on ‘Sunday Night Football,’ he did what he could to put that narrative to bed by completing 21-of-24 passes for 330 yards, four touchdowns and an interception in a dominant 38-14 win. Darnold was deadly accurate Sunday night, completing every pass he attempted in the first half before throwing just eight times in the second half and giving way to Drew Lock in the fourth quarter with the game out of hand. The Seahawks gave Darnold a three- year, $100.5 million contract after his career-year in Minnesota last season. So far he’s rewarded them with 2,084 passing yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions en route to a 6-2 record through eight games. Which brings us to today’s quiz. It was the third time of Darnold’s career – and second already of the 2025 campaign – that he’s thrown for at least 300 yards and four touchdowns in the same game. Steelers' Undrafted Free Agent Rookie Could Help Influence 2026 First-Round Decision
Even though the Pittsburgh Steelers have gotten quality quarterback play in 2025 with Aaron Rodgers, they still need to search for a future face of the franchise. Rodgers is almost 42 years old and close to retirement. Even if he does play another season, it will be good to have a first-round pick behind him to learn and develop in a way that even most coaches can't do. If Pittsburgh has to trade up to get a quality option, the front office has to stop delaying the inevitable and take a shot at a young gun. Just because Ke'Shawn Williams is an undrafted rookie for the Steelers, that doesn't mean that he can't help with a scouting report. After his final year in college, he worked with recent transfer Fernando Mendoza during offseason training, as well as Williams' Pro Day. He spoke with reporter Brian Batko about what he has seen in the Indiana Hoosiers' star. "It’s just his ability to do everything," Williams said. "He can make the throws, he’s very mobile, he has a lot of experience, very smart leader, a good person — all the intangible things you want out of a quarterback, somebody to come in and potentially lead your group...He’s got my vote, for sure." After transferring from the California Golden Bears to Indiana, Mendoza has lit the college world on fire. He currently leads the FBS in touchdown passes through eight games, and it's not like Indiana has had an easy schedule either. He has gone up against two Top 10 teams in the country and led the Hoosiers to victories in both contests, including a road upset against the Oregon Ducks. Indiana is now the #2 team in the country, only behind conference rival Ohio State Buckeyes. If Mendoza and the Hoosiers keep this up, the two teams will face off in the Big 10 conference championship game, where the winner will have the top seed in the College Football Playoffs and get a first-round bye, while the loser would have to play in the first round. This amazing 2025 performance has put the 22-year-old junior near the top of the quarterback rankings of the 2026 draft class. He is currently favored to win the Heisman Trophy as well. Depending on how he does in this last month of football and in the playoffs, he may even be out of the Steelers' reach, as he could easily be the first overall pick. Even if he falls outside the Top 5, it may be worth it for the Steelers to make a trade to get him. Steelers Are Likely Underwhelmed By Everyone Else It goes without saying that outside of Mendoza, most draft-eligible quarterbacks have completely bottomed out in the 2025 season. It's so bad that the Steelers may consider skipping out on drafting a quarterback in 2026 if they can't land Mendoza. If that is the case, the price to trade up in the 2026 NFL draft may rise up as well. Of course, the Steelers overall have not played great football, and there is a realistic chance that they end up drafting higher than they usually do. Obviously, nobody in that organization has any desire to tank, but a sub-par season for Pittsburgh standards could put them in a better position to go and get their guy. What is there to lose at this point? Despite Williams' scouting report on Mendoza, it's not set in stone that General Manager Omar Khan will do everything he can to try and draft the Indiana star. However, that inside information will still be helpful in the long run, especially Khan believes his testimony lines up with the tape at all. The undrafted receiver is not the deciding vote, but he could give a little nudge to help sway the Steelers towards selecting him.
