Reliving the Flames best goals of 2024

The Calgary Flames scored 238 goals in 2024 – as of the Christmas break – plus seven more goals in the shootout.

Some of the goals the Flames goals were fairly ugly. But some of the goals scored were quite awesome and worthy of revisiting. We canvassed our followers on Twitter and BlueSky, and here are the goals that were mentioned the most often by Flames fans.

Rasmus Andersson – Jan. 4

The Flames had won back-to-back games to start 2024 by the time they made their trip to Nashville. The opening period was eventful, with the teams exchanging goals pretty frequently. With the Flames holding a 3-2 lead and eyeing the intermission, Andersson dangled his way through the Nashville defence and backhanded a puck past Juuse Saros to give the Flames a 4-2 lead.

The goal stood up as the eventual game-winner in a 6-3 victory.

Yegor Sharangovich – Mar. 2

There’s a certain segment of the Flames fanbase that gets nervous about how the team will play in games that follow major ceremonies. There have been times when the Flames come out flat after a lengthy ceremony, and Mar. 2’s jersey retirement for Miikka Kiprusoff was an occasion where fans were very excited to honour a franchise great… but anxious about the game that followed.

The Flames got down 2-0 to the Pittsburgh Penguins after the ceremony, but began to mount a comeback in the second period. Yegor Sharangovich got them on the board with a superb individual effort, ending with him beating Tristan Jarry.

Nazem Kadri – Mar. 2

Later in the game, Nazem Kadri also scored a heck of a goal off the rush with a tremendous display of individual skill.

(The Flames ended up winning by a 4-3 score.)

Andrei Kuzmenko – Mar. 28

Andrei Kuzmenko has emerged as a fairly controversial figure in Flames circles in 2024. On one hand, when he’s off his game, he can be quite a forgettable hockey player. But when he’s on, he’s on, and he can take over games with his pure offensive skill.

He absolutely undressed Jordan Binnington in the first period of the Flames’ visit to St. Louis in late March. (The Flames ended up losing 5-3.)

Connor Zary – Oct. 9

The first game of the 2024-25 season was an absolute rollercoaster. There were sweet goals. There were fights. There were injuries. And the Flames managed to claw back from multiple deficits to force overtime.

In extra time, Connor Zary called game with this snipe on Vancouver Canucks netminder Arturs Silovs.

Justin Kirkland – Oct. 22, Nov. 19 and Nov. 23

Should shootout goals count in our tally? We are going to say yes, and we’re going to include three of Justin Kirkland’s markers. Kirkland’s fantastic season was unfortunately cut short due to a knee injury, but not before he helped the Flames win three shootouts with an identical move.

We swear these are all different goal clips – from Oct. 22 against Pittsburgh, Nov. 19 against the Islanders and Nov. 23 against Minnesota.

Matt Coronato – Nov. 5

If you want to point at a moment where Matt Coronato may have solidified his spot with the Flames, it’s probably sometime during their comeback overtime victory in Montreal back in November.

After scoring a third period goal to get the game to overtime, Coronato called game immediately after the opening face-off.

Connor Zary – Nov. 21

Zary was asked after his game-winner against the Rangers if he picked that spot over Igor Shesterkin’s shoulder. He indicated that the puck was bouncing on him a bit and he was just trying to put it on net.

Either way, it was a pretty impressive shot that won the Flames a close game by a 3-2 score.

Rasmus Andersson – Dec. 3

If there was a goal scored on Saddledome ice since Johnny Gaudreau’s overtime winner in 2022 against Dallas that resulted in more positive emotions than Andersson’s goal against Columbus, we can’t think of one. (The Flames ended up winning 3-0.)

Nazem Kadri – Dec. 12

Kadri jumped over Tampa Bay defender J.J. Moser in the midst of this sequence, then spun and beat Andrei Vasilevskiy. (The Flames ended up losing 8-3.)

Nazem Kadri – Dec. 14

We’re guessing that Kadri likes player the Florida teams, because he unleashed another beauty against the Panthers. First there’s the larceny he commits against Dmitry Kulikov with the steal of the puck, followed by the sneaky dekes that baffled Spencer Knight prior to the goal. (The Flames won 3-0.)

Jonathan Huberdeau – Dec. 21

Finally, we will single out Jonathan Huberdeau for the speed, puck protection and precision on this shorthanded goal he scored against Chicago before Christmas. (The Flames won 6-4.)

Which goal scored by the Flames in 2024 do you think was the best?
