A former star is trying to crack an NHL roster once again.

According to multiple reports, the Pittsburgh Penguins are inviting forward Robby Fabbri to training camp on a professional tryout.

Fabbri is looking for a fresh start after what was a rough 2024-25 season with the Anaheim Ducks. Injuries continued to haunt the Mississauga native, as a lower-body injury held him out of the lineup for almost a month in November and December. Then, an upper-body injury in February led to him being shut down for the remainder of the campaign.

The ailments limited Fabbri to just 44 games, scoring just eight goals and eight assists for 16 points.

Fabbri came to the end of his three-year contract extension that he signed with the Detroit Red Wings in December 2021. The deal had a cap hit of $4 million. He was traded to Orange County, along with a draft pick, for goaltender Gage Alexander in July 2024.

The injuries have hindered what should’ve been an exceptional career for the former first-round pick. He burst onto the scene with the St. Louis Blues in 2015 and was a member of the team that won the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in 2019. That came after a torn ACL ended his 2016-17 season prematurely, with him missing the entire 2017-18 campaign after tearing the same ligament again in training camp.

While he was eventually traded to the Red Wings the following year, multiple knee injuries led to him missing substantial time, including playing in a career-low 28 games during the 2022-23 season. In his 10-year NHL career, Fabbri has never come close to appearing in all 82 games. The most came during his run as a rookie in 2015-16, when he scored a career-high 18 goals and 19 assists for 37 points.

In 442 NHL regular-season affairs, Fabbri has notched 106 goals and 110 assists for 216 points, with another 16 points coming in 30 playoff games.

If Fabbri were to impress the Pens’ brass during camp, they have plenty of room to fit him onto their roster. According to PuckPedia, Pittsburgh has over $13 million in projected cap space for the 2025-26 campaign.
