According to David Pagnotta, the San Jose Sharks have signed forward Oliver Wahlstrom to a professional tryout and will report to the team’s training camp this week.
If Wahlstrom were not to make the team, he would have somewhere to play. The San Jose Barracuda, the Sharks’ American Hockey League affiliate, announced on Tuesday that Wahlstrom signed a contract with the team.

Wahlstrom is coming off a one-year contract that he signed with the New York Islanders last July. That contract was moved to the Boston Bruins after the Original Six franchise claimed the Swedish winger off waivers on Dec. 14, 2024. Following the 2024-25 campaign, the Bruins elected not to extend a qualifying offer to Wahlstrom, making him an unrestricted free agent.
The 25-year-old ended up appearing in a total of 43 NHL games last season, posting three goals and three assists for six points. He also notched nine goals and six assists for 15 points in 19 games with the Bruins’ primary affiliate, the Providence Bruins. Wahlstrom notched four points in the Calder Cup Playoff before Providence was eliminated by the eventual Eastern Conference champion Charlotte Checkers.
At one point, Wahlstrom was expected to be a key part of the Islanders’ future, especially since the team took him in the first round, 11th overall, of the 2018 NHL Draft. He had a solid rookie season during the COVID-shortened 2021 campaign, posting 21 points in 44 games. Wahlstrom followed that up with a 24-point performance during the 2021-22 season.
However, injuries and inconsistent play led to the former Boston College star coming in and out of the lineup, appearing in just 32 games with the Isles in 2023-24.
In 241 NHL games, Wahlstrom has registered 38 goals and 38 assists for 76 points. In 81 AHL appearances, he has scored 26 goals and 22 assists for 48 points.
