The NHL announced each team’s nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy today, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins being the Oilers’ pick. This is the first year since 2022 that an Oilers not named Darnell Nurse has been nominated for the award.

The King Clancy is awarded “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”

Unlike some other NHL trophies, the Clancy is chosen by a selection committee which includes NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, and former winners of both the Clancy and the former NHL Foundation Player Award.

Three Oilers have won the trophy in the past: Kevin Lowe in 1990, Ethan Moreau in 2009 and Andrew Ferrence in 2014.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been nominated for the trophy before in 2018 for his work with the Hockey Helps Kids Foundation and his work regarding research and treatment for cystic fibrosis, which he continues to this day. Last year, he helped raise funds for the Food Bank through a special fundraising drive.

This is certainly a well-deserved nomination for a much-loved Oiler, both on the ice and in the community.
