The Anaheim Ducks have traded veteran Ryan Strome to the Calgary Flames for a 2027 seventh-round pick.

The deal was one of the first in the queue following the 2:00 pm CST NHL Trade Deadline.

Strome, 32, has struggled to remain consistent in the Ducks’ lineup, posting just nine points (3G, 6A) in 33 games played for Anaheim this season. He’s in the final year of his five-year contract worth $5 million annually.

His significant dip in production after six straight 40-plus point seasons made it a necessary move for Anaheim to free up cap space.

Strome is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and will likely hit the free agency market this summer.

The former fifth overall draft selection by the New York Islanders in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft has enjoyed 13 NHL seasons. He’s suited up for the Islanders, Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, and the Anaheim Ducks before this trade.

Since making his NHL debut back in 2013-14, Strome has posted 489 points (169G, 320A) and 638 PIMs in 897 NHL games.

Strome’s season was derailed by injuries, as he began the season on the injured reserve with an upper-body injury. If Strome’s injury was plaguing him throughout the season, it could provide an explanation for his offence taking a hit.

Anaheim has added some big pieces and is moving on from Strome’s contract to free up a roster spot and salary cap space. The Flames get a veteran piece looking for a fresh start, and it allows Strome a chance for more playing time.
