Going into Tuesday’s pivotal Game 4, the Buffalo Sabres hadn’t been themselves. They were not only struggling, but important pieces of the puzzle simply hadn’t been pulling their weight. Another loss and the series, for all intents and purposes, may have been over.
A few things stood out in what wound up being a hard-fought Game 4 victory. In what many expect to be a tight series, the Sabres got a boost from a newcomer to the lineup: Konsta Helenius. Though he didn’t wind up on the score sheet, his impact was noticeable.
The thing that jumps out about Helenius’ play in his playoff debut is that he didn’t look out of place. Far too many rookies have come and gone in playoffs past without making a play of significance. Helenius wasn’t one of them.
Helenius stepped in and played on the team’s fourth line as Sam Carrick deals with what could very well be a concussion. He displayed energy, playmaking ability, and just enough physicality to not look out of place. In short, he looked like an experienced veteran suiting up for another playoff game.
Helenius fit in well alongside Beck Malenstyn and Jordan Greenway, bringing a level of skill to the line that stood out. He was even good in the faceoff circle, something the Sabres had been in desperate need of throughout the playoffs.
Though he saw just under 13 minutes of ice time, it was of as much quality as it gets. The fact that he was repeatedly on the ice in the third period when things were most tense shows just how much confidence head coach Lindy Ruff has in him.
As respectable as his debut was officially, it was nearly so much more. For starters, he would have been credited with an assist if the goal by Jack Quinn hadn’t been overturned by a questionable goaltender interference call.
Later in the game, Helenius was the trigger man on a two-on-one that would have been a goal more often than not. Unfortunately, Jakub Dobes made the save of the game to keep the game tied 2-2.
With the Sabres holding a one-goal lead late, Helenius again found himself on a two-on-one that was turned aside by Dobes. The fact that he was even in a position to potentially play hero says as much as you need to know about the 20-year-old Finn.
At the end of the day, the addition of Helenius and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to the lineup played a major role in the Sabres’ win. The Sabres faced a lot of challenges in the game, but now find themselves in a tied series with home ice advantage.
For Sabres fans, the hope is that we have only seen the beginning of what many believe will be a sterling career for the young Finn. If Game 4 is any indication, the Sabres have found themselves another gem.
