The San J0se Sharks continue to make noise at the trade deadline. However, the Sharks aren’t making a trade. News emerged that the Sharks have extended veteran goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic to a two-year contract worth $6 million. This deal carries an average cap hit of $3 million and runs through the end of the 2026-26 season. News of the contract was first broken by Chris Johnston.
The San Jose Sharks have agreed to a two-year extension with Alex Nedeljkovic at $3M AAV, per Chris Johnston.
Nedeljkovic has played for the Carolina Hurricanes. Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the Sharks across his nine-year NHL career. The Parma, Ohio native has an 11-9-2 record with a 2.83 goals-against-average and .902 save percentage.
Nedeljkovic has a career record of 85-69-29 with a 2.97 GAA and a .903 save percentage. The 30-year-old netminder has nine career shutouts. Carolina originally drafted him in the second round, 37th overall of the 2014 NHL Draft.
He finished third in the Calder Trophy voting at the 2020-21 season and made the All-Rookie team that season. Nedeljkovic also backstopped the Charlotte Checkers to the Calder Cup in 2019.
The goalie has also represented his native United States at the international level. He won a bronze medal at the 2016 IIHF World Juniors and was on the fifth-place team at the 2024 IIHF World.
Nedeljkovic has formed a solid partnership with Yaroslav Askarov in San Jose. We’ve seen the Sharks take a big step this season and Nedeljkovic has turned into a solid backup. He can also step up if something should happen to Askarov.
The Sharks will more than likely miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, general manager Mike Grier seems to have the team on the right path. This club may only be a season or two away from really pushing for a postseason spot.
Nedeljkovic is what you want out of a veteran backup goalie. This deal is a nice reward for being a team player in the Bay Area.
