When the Senators placed Warren Foegele on injured reserve earlier this week, it didn’t look like he was going to be available for Saturday’s season opener. However, Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch relays that the veteran is good to go; he has subsequently been activated off injured reserve. With Ottawa sending Hoyt Stanley down earlier today, they had an open roster spot so no further roster move was needed.
The nature of Foegele’s injury that held him out of training camp wasn’t clear at the time but he shed some light on it today. The injury wasn’t something sustained during offseason training but rather was fixing an injury sustained during the playoffs against Carolina.
As for why there was such a delay in having the procedure done, originally, the hope was that Foegele would be able to rehab the injury without surgery. However, it continued to linger and after consulting with Ottawa’s medical staff, the decision was made for him to have the procedure. While he missed the preseason, he won’t miss any regular season action.
Foegele is entering his first full season with Ottawa after being acquired from Los Angeles at the trade deadline. After managing just nine points in 47 games before the trade, he had six goals and two helpers in 21 games down the stretch for the Sens before being held off the scoresheet in the playoffs.
This is the final season of Foegele’s contract and he’ll certainly be eyeing a bounce-back season after surpassing the 40-point mark in the two years before 2025-26. It looks like he’ll get a good chance offensively to start, as Garrioch notes that the winger is expected to start on Ottawa’s top line alongside Drake Batherson and Tim Stutzle.
