The Ottawa Senators are nearing an extension with pending RFA defenseman Jordan Spence, reports Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch. According to Garrioch, the deal will be in the range of a four-year term, while Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported the deal will be worth approximately $20MM total, which would be a $5MM AAV across a four-year term.
In addition to Spence, the Senators have re-signed two other defensemen: AHL blueliners Samuel Bolduc and Djibril Toure. The financial terms of those deals were not disclosed by the team, but PuckPedia reported the details of each deal.
Bolduc’s two-way extension will carry a league-minimum $850K NHL salary, and a $425K AHL salary. Upon the expiration of the deal, Bolduc will be a Group-VI UFA. Toure’s two-way deal also holds an $850K NHL salary, but his AHL salary will be $80K.
The most important player re-signed today is, of course, Spence. The 25-year-old took a substantial step forward for his career in what was his first campaign as a Senator, scoring a career-high 31 points in 73 games. He averaged 18:43 time on ice per game, which ranked No. 4 on his team, and averaged 1:16 time on ice per game on the power play.
While Spence is somewhat undersized at 5’11, 188 pounds, he is an exceptional puck-mover and has developed into a legitimately valuable top-four defenseman. He slotted in next to Thomas Chabot on the right side of Ottawa’s second pairing, and the extension should set in stone the top-four of the Senators’ defense, with Jake Sanderson and Artem Zub as the team’s first pairing.
Although Spence may, long-term, face a challenge for his role by 2024 No. 7 overall pick Carter Yakemchuk, this deal solidifies his spot in Ottawa’s plans for the time being. Yakemchuk, 20, is a big right-shot defenseman who ranks among Ottawa’s very best prospects.
His aggressive offensive style helped him score 40 points in 54 AHL games in his debut professional campaign, and he added four points in five NHL games across the regular season and playoffs. Spence could surrender his top-four role to Yakemchuk at some point over the course of this four-year extension, or Yakemchuk could simply replace Zub if Zub departs as a UFA next summer.
In any case, this extension is a solid reward for Spence’s development as an NHL player. He was traded away from the team that drafted him, the Los Angeles Kings, for two draft picks last summer, and is now certainly worth quite a bit more. He’s been a developmental success story for head coach Travis Green and his staff, and the hope will be that he can sustain his developmental momentum next season.
Shifting to Bolduc, the 25-year-old is certainly not as important to Ottawa’s plans for next season as Spence, but he still will have a useful organizational role to play for the team in 2026-27. Bolduc was acquired by the Senators from the Los Angeles Kings organization in March, and scored 10 points in 12 AHL games after the deal.
The former New York Islander is a strong two-way defenseman at the AHL level, and should hold down a top-pairing role for Belleville. He’s reached 35 points in the AHL on two occasions, and has played in 54 NHL games, including two postseason contests.
While Bolduc may not be the top priority of the Senators when they inevitably consider which defensemen to recall next season, his re-signing does provide the team with some experienced cover in case injuries hit their blueline. And for Bolduc, he gets a solid raise from the $275K he made last season, a reflection of his increasing stock as quality organizational depth.
Toure, 23, is not quite at that level yet. The big 6’7″, 203-pound defenseman was signed by Ottawa as an undrafted OHL blueliner in September 2023. The Senators were no doubt intrigued by Toure’s physical tools, but those tools have not yet allowed Toure to hold down a consistent lineup spot at the AHL level. He finished 2025-26 playing in the ECHL playoffs for the Allen Americans.
The hope with this extension will be that Toure can take a step forward and lay a more firm claim on a regular spot in Belleville’s AHL lineup.
