Two young forwards will join the Ottawa Senators on their upcoming three-game road trip. Philip Tomasino and Xavier Bourgault have both been recalled, while Warren Foegele was moved to injured reserve with a knee injury sustained in Tuesday’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights. Foegele is expected to miss an extended period of time with what appeared to be a knee injury. Senators’ forward Hayden Hodgson was also suspended for the next two games for boarding Los Angeles Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke.
A pair of absences should open space for both Tomasino and Bourgault to fit into the lineup. The duo lead the AHL’s Belleville Senators in scoring with 11 and nine points through 10 games respectively. Neither has played in the NHL yet this season. Bourgault made two appearances with the Senators last season – the first two games of his NHL career – but managed no scoring and a minus-one. Tomasino played nine games with the Pittsburgh Penguins last year but scored one assist.
Tomasino moved from the Nashville Predators to the Penguins partway through the 2024-25 season. The move was originally seen as an upside bet on a high-skill, offensive player. Tomasino went on to score 23 points in 50 games with Pittsburgh to close the year – but failed to build on that production headed into 2025-26. Tomasino was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in December 2025. He spent his tenure with the Flyers’ in an AHL role and signed a one-year contract with Ottawa over the summer.
Bourgault has spent the last four seasons working his way into production in the minor-leagues. He notched 34 points in 62 games of his first pro season in 2022-23 but slipped to 20 and 26 points in 2023-24 and 2024-25 respectively. The two-way forward found his spark last year, rising to 25 goals and 57 points in 70 games with Belleville. He earned his NHL debut on the back of that production and has kept it rolling through the start of this season.
The two former first-round picks are likely to compete for Hodgson’s right-wing role in the bottom-six. While Tomasino might offer more offensive spark, the vacancy could be a chance to reward Bourgault with the first extended look of his career. A strong performance could earn either forward a chance at filling Foegele’s spot for the near future – overtaking Hodgson’s presence as a checking forward.
