A promising young prospect has signed his first NHL deal.

On Wednesday, Ottawa Senators general manager Steve Staios announced that the team has signed Blake Montgomery to a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal begins next year, with Montgomery joining the Senators’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Belleville Senators, for the rest of the 2025-26 season on an amateur tryout.

The signing comes less than a week after Montgomery and the Wisconsin Badgers played in the NCAA Men’s National Championship Game, ultimately coming up short, losing to the Denver Pioneers, 2-1.

The Annapolis, Md. native had finished up his freshman season with the Badgers. While he had some productive stretches, he couldn’t find a rhythm that made him a consistent scoring threat in the junior ranks. In 38 games, he scored nine goals and eight assists for 17 points, but didn’t register any points in the national tournament. Montgomery also missed Wisconsin’s lone game in the Big Ten Tournament, a quarterfinal loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Prior to playing college, Montgomery was coming off a memorable run with the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights. Despite starting the 2024-25 season with the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League, he joined the Knights in November. In 51 games in London, he posted 23 goals and 27 assists for 50 points, with another 10 points in playoffs as the Knights won a second straight OHL championship. Montgomery added another two points in the Memorial Cup, scoring a goal in the semifinal win over the Moncton Wildcats, with the Knights going on to win the Canadian Hockey League’s top prize for the third time in franchise history.

Montgomery was taken by the Senators in the fourth round, 117th overall, of the 2024 NHL Draft.
