Shane Pinto lifts Senators past Islanders in shootout

Shane Pinto scored the only goal in the shootout Thursday night for the host Ottawa Senators, who outlasted the New York Islanders 2-1.

Pinto, the Senators' third skater in the shootout, shuffled the puck as he approached Islanders goalie Semyon Varlamov before sending a shot beyond Varlamov's glove. Ottawa goalie Linus Ullmark then stopped New York's Simon Holmstrom to seal the win.

Ridly Greig scored in the second for the Senators, who have won six of their first eight games (6-2-0). Ullmark made 20 saves in regulation and overtime.

Matias Maccelli scored for the second straight game for the Islanders, who have alternated wins and losses in their first seven contests (3-3-1). Varlamov, seeking his first win since Nov. 14, 2024, made 18 saves. The 38-year-old missed last season while recovering from double partial knee replacements.

The Senators had two potential first-period goals overturned on video review before Maccelli put New York ahead with an unassisted tally with 11.2 seconds remaining.

Warren Foegele appeared to give Ottawa the lead 4:50 into the game, but the puck slid along the goal line without fully crossing it. The Islanders' challenge was successful with 8:06 left, when Stephen Halliday's goal was disallowed after a review showed the Senators were offside.

Maccelli finally broke the scoreless tie when he stole the puck from Pinto deep in the Ottawa zone, took a couple strides and fired a shot over Ullmark's glove as Islanders center Bo Horvat and Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot skated into the shooting lane.

Greig tied the score with 4:17 left in the second. Artem Zub sent a clearing pass from Ottawa's goal line through the neutral zone to Foegele, who threaded a backhanded feed past a sliding Kyle Palmieri. Greig collected the puck and flicked a shot over Varlamov's blocker.

Both teams picked up penalties in overtime, but the Islanders killed off Adam Pelech's hooking call at the 1:52 mark and the Senators burned the final 59 seconds after Dylan Cozens was whistled for tripping.
