The San Jose Sharks have waived Patrick Giles, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports. The winger had been on non-roster injured reserve, dealing with an upper-body injury from the preseason but always expected to return to the AHL when healthy. As a 26-year-old, however, he must pass through the wire before doing so.
Undrafted out of Boston College where he was teammates with standouts such as Matt Boldy, Giles is not a total NHL stranger himself. He got into three games for the Sharks last season and chipped in an assist. Originally catching on with an AHL try-out from the Charlotte Checkers in 2022, he impressively turned it into 187 regular season appearances for the club, debuting with the Florida Panthers in October 2024 as part of a nine-game stint.
Traded to the Sharks organization in exchange for Vítek Vaněček in March 2025, Giles made a quick impression with four goals in eight games for the Barracuda, unexpected from a 6’5″, 220 lbs skater not known for his offense. Playing against Washington early into his San Jose tenure, the team shared a childhood photo of Giles posing with an equally much younger Alexander Ovechkin in what was a memorable moment for the Maryland native to play against an idol from his youth.
Giles has been able to stick around in the Sharks organization ever since, earning a two-year extension over the off-season. A defense-first forward who leads a penalty killing units, there’s always the chance of a call-up for spot-duty on the fourth line, however of course the Sharks are in a much different place now than where they were when he first arrived on scene. Assuming he clears waivers, the Barracuda would be happy to welcome back the veteran, looking to build off last year’s 40-win campaign which ended in the Qualifying Round of the AHL playoffs.
