The Toronto Maple Leafs fell 6-1 in Game 5, and now, with the team on the brink of elimination, Craig Berube will be forced into a major change.
Things were going well for the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 2-0 lead in their second round series with the Florida Panthers, but since that time they have dropped three straight games, losing 6-1 on home ice in Game 5, with fans clearly frustrated about the teams level of play in the embarrassing defeat.
It wasn't just captain Auston Matthews that struggled however, as his line was the worst in the game on either team, with the expected goals % for Matthews, Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies, the supposed top line of this team sitting at 0% on the night.
On the other side, it was the Panthers fourth-line that replicated this lack of success, but with their top stars firing, Florida overcame these struggles, but with all of the Maple Leafs top stars failing to step up to the plate, this game was over early.
After three straight defeats, the Maple Leafs will now somehow need to find a way to regroup, but if the Marner-Matthews-Knies line can't get any sustained offense going, there's just no way that this team can beat the Panthers in two straight games.
This meltdown comes after showing so much promise earlier in the post-season, but with a lack of success in the time that the Core Four have been leading the way in Toronto, it may simply be time to face the fact that this team isn't one that can find success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
While it may be doom and gloom in Toronto on Wednesday night, the team will look to pick themselves up and get back into the series in Game 6, and perhaps a Berube change to this lineup could do that, because if not, sweeping changes are coming throughout the organization in the summer.
