Sportsnet Hints at Claude Giroux Walking Away From the Ottawa Senators

Veteran forward Claude Giroux could walk away from the Ottawa Senators this summer, according to a recent report from Sportsnet.

The Senators have to address many needs over the offseason and dealing with their free agents will be at the top of that list. But with many young players needing contracts, some veterans could be forced to sign elsewhere.

According to Sportsnet, that could be Claude Giroux's case.

Giroux will be a free agent on July 1st, and the Senators could have to watch him leave the team for nothing in return, as many teams could be interested in acquiring him if he were to hit the market.

During his exit interview, Giroux mentioned that he loves Ottawa, that he had fun in the season, but didn't talk to Steve Staios about an extension, suggesting he could end up with another team:

'It's still early. I haven't given it any thoughts. I haven't really talked to (general manager) Steve (Staios) yet. I love the players, the fans, the city. This year is the most fun I've had in a few years.'

'I feel like I have a lot left in the tank. I'm loving hockey right now," said Giroux. "I want to play. Feel like I can be an impact player.'

Giroux, 37, still has what it takes to have an impact with a team, but will he still be able to do it in two or three years?

With the salary cap raise, Giroux could be worth $4 or $5 million, but would he accept a lower salary to remain in Ottawa?

At this stage of their careers, players usually try to get the biggest salary as they don't know how many more years they'll be able to compete at the highest level. If Giroux wants more money, signing with another team could be inevitable.

In the playoffs, Giroux scored five points in six games. During the regular season, he scored 50 points, including 15 goals, in 81 games.

Stay tuned for updates.
