The St. Louis Blues have traded their captain, Brayden Schenn, to the New York Islanders for Colorado’s 2026 first-round pick and a 2026 third-round pick, alongside Jonathan Drouin and goaltending prospect Marcus Gidlof.
Brayden Schenn waived his no-trade clause to facilitate this trade to the Islanders.
Schenn joins Nick Foligno as just another captain to be traded at this year’s NHL Trade Deadline. This is also a massive swing by the Islanders as they went from selecting first overall at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft to fighting to stay in third place in the Metropolitan Division playoff race.
With the Columbus Blue Jackets hot on the heels of the Islanders, the addition of Schenn adds Stanley Cup-winning experience and gives the team more veteran presence as they build around Matthew Schaefer.
Schenn, 34, is a former fifth overall draft selection by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He’s suited up for the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, and most recently the St. Louis Blues.
Across 17 NHL seasons, Schenn has posted 713 points (290G, 423A) and 641 PIMs in 1,083 NHL games. Schenn won a Stanley Cup in 2019 with the St. Louis Blues, a team he’s played the significant majority of his 82 Stanley Cup Playoff games with. Schenn has posted 43 points (13G, 30A) and 96 PIMs in postseason competition.
With there being reports that the Schenn brothers wanted to play together once more before they call it a career, Luke Schenn becomes a possible trade option for the Islanders should things work out that way.
The Islanders add necessary grit to their lineup, and he adds a proper punch to the lineup as a middle-six centre. This is the centre depth the Islanders have been looking for, and this also feels like the swing that the Islanders were anticipated to make this year.
