A major trade ripple could be coming out of Calgary, as defenseman Rasmus Andersson has confirmed the Flames have asked him to waive his no-trade clause and the Dallas Stars might be one of the most intriguing fits in the league.
Andersson, 28, is entering the final year of his deal with a $4.55M cap hit and brings strong puck-moving skills, offensive upside, and plenty of top-pairing experience.
For a Stars team that has already been to three straight Western Conference Finals, adding a player like Andersson could be the kind of move that pushes them over the top.
Speaking to Swedish outlet Expressen, Andersson said:
"I have not given Calgary a team. I haven't actually spoken to Calgary since they made the request, which was a month and a half ago."
Dallas already has Miro Heiskanen anchoring their blue line, but Andersson could give the Stars one of the most dynamic top-two defense pairings in the NHL.
He would also provide insurance if the team decided to get creative with roster construction, and yes, that includes the possibility of being involved in a Jason Robertson trade if the contract situation with Robertson drags on.
While trading Robertson would be a massive shake-up, The Hockey News has speculated in the past that Dallas could explore big swings if the return addresses multiple needs.
Andersson would certainly fill one, but acquiring him won't come cheap.
The Flames will be looking for significant assets, and Dallas would need to navigate a tight cap situation to make it work.
Personally, I think Andersson in Dallas would instantly make the Stars' defense one of the league's best, but it would take bold negotiating from Jim Nill to pull it off.
