Stars Appear to Be Aligning for Brad Marchand to Sign With One Specific Canadian Team

The Florida Panthers are getting amazing contributions from Brad Marchand, but will he stay with the team or seek more money on the open market this summer?

Brad Marchand has done it again, scoring what was already his 4th goal of the SCF against the Edmonton Oilers in Monday's 6-1 win to take a 2-1 series lead.

He brought the house down with a goal just under a minute into the contest, the 1st of 6 goals on the night for the Panthers.

Marchand continues to prove that he's worthy of getting a major new contract this summer, but will it be with the Panthers or somewhere else?

Analyst Chris Johnston joined TSN's OverDrive with Bryan Hayes, Jamie McLennan, and Jeff O'Neill to talk about not only the impact that Marchand has had on the Panthers but also what he could earn on the open market.

What I'm hearing, he's in a position where he wants to maximize his earning potential on the next contract. I think that just the way things turned out, he did that 8 year deal with Boston that's coming to an end on June 30. He did that deal during the World Cup tournament in 2016 - clearly, his career went up in a big way from the point he signed that. He probably didn't make as much money for how great of a player he's been.

Hayes threw out the idea of Marchand potentially earning even more money through endorsement deals with whomever he signs with.

If it is about money....endorsement money could factor in, that would be a bigger market team, would it not? To be able to find some money on the side?

Johnston seemed open to the idea, saying that it would, in fact, be part of a potential sales pitch on the part of the Leafs for Marchand to come to Toronto.

For sure, that would be part of the sales pitch for the Leafs, if that's who you're winking at. Or one of the other teams - I can tell you, this is not going to be a discount kind of deal. He's earned the right to be a true free agent.

It was Marchand who helped the Panthers beat the Maple Leafs in the ECSF en route to their 3rd straight appearance in the SCF.

Whether or not Marchand would actually be interested in playing for the Leafs is another issue and remains to be seen.
