After losing a 2nd straight Stanley Cup Final to the Panthers, Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner shares a behind the scenes moment with Panthers' Sergei Bobrovsky that had him admittedly on the verge of tears.
The Edmonton Oilers suffered a bad case of deja vu , as they were defeated in the Stanley Cup Final for the 2nd year in a row by the Florida Panthers and had to watch them celebrate in their home rink.
Once again, the state of Edmonton's goaltending came under question during the postseason. Just like last year, they utilized both Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard at various points during their 2-month journey back to the Cup Final, which included lots of highs and lows.
Both goalies played in the Cup Final, and both faltered when it mattered the most. Afterward, Skinner shared a behind the scenes glimpse at his brief conversation with Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky in the handshake line that he admitted brought him to tears.
Yeah, [Bobrovsky] brought tears to my eyes with what he was saying. I'm going to keep that for my heart. He's 36, been playing for 14 years, and you can tell, because nothing changes for him. You can tell mentally he's in the same spot whether he lets in 6 or gets a shutout. From Game 1, to the last 2 minutes where he knew that he won the Stanley Cup. He didn't change for one second.
Major questions will be leveled at Oilers GM Stan Bowman on how he wants to proceed moving forward, and why a move wasn't made at the Trade Deadline or during last summer to acquire a more experienced goaltender that could have perhaps helped Edmonton enjoy a happier ending this time around.
Skinner has a year left on his current contract before he can become a UFA in 2026.
